I had been wanting to try this pace for some time. I've been here twice now mostly for drinks. It's rare to find a bar these days with consistent good bar tenders, but the two-three guys who work this bar are very down to earth, nice dudes who pour good drinks. They seem to treat all their customers equally, and again, they pour quality drinks with good service. I was impressed by that. As far as food goes, I've only tried the Curry Wings. The verdict's still out on them. They were kinda bland, and I'm not sure I'm a fan of the tzatziki dipping sauce. The fries were good, but I need to try other dishes before I render a verdict about the food. The bar service alone, though, warrants four stars. I'll update about the food later.

I really want to rate this neighborhood restaurant higher but the food just brings it down. The good: 1. It's a nice size so except for the absolute busiest times you aren't waiting for long. 2. They have a great bar area with standing and sitting room. 3. Great choices of beer that rotate regularly. The So-So 1. The wait staff isn't the best I've ever encountered. 2. The menu is very hit or miss. I've been here over a dozen times (it's close, sacrifices are made) and most of the food has been bland. The Bad 1. Bread should be free. It may be made with Organic Flour and Heirloom yeast but $5+ for a few slices of bread is insane. Go with more pedestrian bread and give your guest a little something to tide them over while waiting on the wait staff. 2. A home fry cannot be called a hash brown. It just doesn't work that way. If you're looking for a beer go to White Oak. If you're looking for decent middle priced food go to Ernesto's. If you're looking for Fine dining Iron Bridge Wine company is right down Centennial. If you're looking for pub fare and don't care what you're drinking go to Glory Days (opening any day now). TL;DR Competition is heating up in the area, if White Oak is going to survive they need to step up their food service or just embrace the bar aspect.

White oak tavern... Solid food, good vibe and decent prices. White Oak Tavern is located in a strip mall off of rt 40. The location has a good sized bar and dining area, so groups are welcome and even at peak times you don't feel stuffed into a box. I have been here 3 times now and have enjoyed each and every time. The service, food and prices are all spot on and worth coming back for. I have come here for brunch, dinner, lunch and even just to drink. Some of my highlights are below. Food: Fries - Their fries are great and the ketchup and aioli are good sides. I did not like the garlic/parmesan fries because they were covered in cheese and super oily, whereas the reg. fries were nicely done and the portions were decent as well. Egg sandwiches: The White Oak Tavern makes their own muffin and the muffin is great and fit about 2 eggs. With that you, one can make their own egg sandwich so you can customize any which way you want! You feel spicy add the harissa or if you feel salty add the bacon or corn bread. Blackened Catfish: The Blackened Cat fish sandwhich was great. It had great flavor, texture and feel to it. From the start to the finish I enjoyed every bite of it! Mac and Cheese: The Mac and Cheese is stellar, it is only found on the kids menu but it is so cheesy and yummy that one needs to order it, even if you are a kid on the inside! Service - For each visit the service has been great, always helpful no matter the size of the party. So points for that! Overall I highly recommend The White Oak Tavern, their prices, food and services are on point and well worth coming back for more! Please note, their beer selection is pretty decent and worth looking into along with their Happy Hour Specials. So drink up!

Absolutely love this place!!! Great beer selections and the White Oak Tavern Burger is outstanding. I frequently visit here and have never been disappointed.

As always this place is amazing. House made ketchup is by far the best ketchup in the world. The draft last is massive and changes often. Love the menu, love the beer list and most of all love the staff. I only ever had one issue with service and didn't complain but I will say that I haven't seen that waitress since. This place is well staffed and well run. Our favorite hangout that keeps us coming back again and again!

I have been here a few times and they never disappoint. I stopped in today to meet up with a friend who canceled on me after I got there. Oh well no big deal, I decided to roll solo and have a beer or 2. I ordered a beer flight and a small plate poutine at the bar. The bar tender was very friendly and attentive. The beer flight was reasonably priced runs from $10.00 to $18.00 depending on what beers you choose. They always have a new selection including a lot of the local micro breweries like Heavy Seas and Flying Dog. My food came quickly and was pretty good. Their fries are great fresh cut and lightly seasoned. Everything is locally sourced and it shows in the flavor of the food. Bar area isn't that large but the whole place is in the small side, but that's part of the places charm. There are plenty of tvs around to watch a game. I will definitely have to come back to check out there pint night. They also have their own app that will get you a half off discount on a small plate .

I stopped by White Oak Tavern for one reason. I had been hiking at Patapsco State Park and I needed a restaurant that would allow my dog in the outside seating area. It didn't affect my rating, but it's a really nice feature to the restaurant. The food was solid. My table ordered the Tavern burger, pimento cheese, oysters, curry wings, greek salad, and a bowl of leek soup. Everything tasted great. I thought their savory brunch selections really complemented the regional beers featured on tap. The service was excellent. I will definitely be back on my next visit to Patapsco.
(4)Meg L.
The beer selection at the white oak is the best in the area. 95% of the time the service is amazing and the food is creative and always tastes wonderful! Definitely one of my favorite places

Great drinks, and I mean one of the best margaritas I've had in awhile. Decent ambiance. I was NOT at all happy with how one of the managers treated people when asked questions. Down right rude actually. But I do love the drinks.

My husband and I had date night dinner on Saturday night. This was a third time we've been there and we find ourselves enjoying it more each time. I think they tweaked their menu since few months ago and it was a definite improvement. They had some fusion Korean inspired dishes such as fried pork kimchi pancakes and Bulgogi cheesesteaks. We tried the pork dish and it was done well. Having that with craft beer was music to our tummies. I also had gumbo and although the quantity was slightly small, it was very well flavored gumbo. The drinks are reviewed by so many others so it's no surprise: they have great selection. I live their craft ciders on tap. Pumpkin cider? Yes, please. The only lack of final star was due to the table we were sat. It was drafty spot so we had to keep our coats on.

Good, but slightly disappointing first experience here. I've heard great things about this place, and Ellicott City can always use a good restaurant as there aren't many around. My parents have been frequenting the Tavern since it opened and they love it. I went with them for the first time a few days ago. First of all, the place looks great. The layout is similar to the old Jilly's, but it's obviously far nicer. The service was good and attentive too. We ordered a few appetizers: the curry wings (which were a dry rubbed wing, they were pretty good but could've used more of the seasoning), and another one whose name is escaping me. It was a mediterranean-type dish with a homemade sausage and a lentil patty. The sausage especially was delicious, and the patty was good too. For my meal, I got the day's special: a kimchi cheesesteak. It sounded great: the specials sheet listed it as having steak, homemade kimchi, and muenster cheese. All things that I like. Things that I don't like: onions. And it came with a ton of onions, which is unfortunate, because I could've easily asked for it without onions if I knew they were coming. I've always been of the opinion that if you're going to list some of the toppings, list all of the toppings, for exactly this reason. If they listed nothing, I would've asked what came on it. If they listed everything, I would've seen onions and asked to have them removed. Oh well. I removed the onions and ate the steak. It was good, but the kimchi itself did not quite have the spice/acidity that I love in kimchi, which was especially needed on something as heavy as a cheesesteak. One thing I will say - this was probably the first time in my life I've gone to a restaurant that makes their own ketchup, and ended up being happy that they make their own ketchup. Usually when this happens I end up just wishing I had a bottle of Heinz, but the house-made ketchup here was fastastic. It had a grilled / smoky taste that was really good, and went very well with the hand-cut fries. I have a feeling I'll be upgrading my review when I come back, and I will be back because even a 3-star experience makes it one of the better places in Ellicott City in my book. It was very promising, just a little bit of a miss on the special.
(3)Lynie H.
Had the 'simple start' which consisted of eggs, hash or toast, bacon or Canadian bacon....their homemade ketchup is really good n so is their hot sauce...they have bottomless drinks for $10 yay!!! But u have to get a brunch item.
(4)Rebeca F.
Been meaning to go here for a while, and I'm glad I finally did! Nice size and ambiance. I enjoyed the dinner and drink menu, lots of good choices, and even multiple vegetarian options, which is always a treat. We sat at the bar and had great service. Mark is a very nice guy! I was pleased to find out they are farm to table. Was very pleased with everything I ordered. They have a deal right now on Local Flavor. Seems like they have a ton of fun events there, too. Will be back!
(4)Todd F.
Amazing place. Food is great, especially the burgers. They have a great selection of beers and their bartenders know how to make mixed drinks. The bands and the comedy are excellent too.

Stopped here with a group of six for Sunday brunch. As we drove up, I was thoroughly unimpressed by the corner strip-mall location. But when we got inside, I was relieved to find that the interior is much nicer. I loved their brunch menu, They had about half a dozen items that looked incredible. Also, they have bottomless brunch cocktails (including bloody Mary's) for $10. I settled on the veggie hash and bowl o bacon with bottomless bloody Mary's. The veggie hash was really good- asparagus, carrots, beets, and onion topped with two poached eggs. The bacon, which apparently is made in-house was only okay. The main issue is that it was cooked inconsistently; some pieces were really crisp while others definitely needed more time on the griddle. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. Someone ordered the pimento cheese ball. Get this! It's great for sharing. The bloody Mary's were pretty standard, but they do a good job of making them extra spicy if requested. Our server was nice, but her service was terribly slow. To be fair, we staggered in two groups, 10 minutes apart. I'm aware that this can throw off some servers. But even after we had settled in and ordered, we rarely saw her. Not good considering half the table had ordered bottomless drinks; it's not really bottomless when there's no one around to get refills (I ended up having only two). Twice during the meal I grabbed the water pitcher myself to refill glasses at our table. Despite the service, it was a decent brunch experience. 4 stars for food and 2 for service equal a 3 star experience.

Came here tonight with a fellow yelper (Jackie A.) and her husband. It was fine company but the food didn't quite excite anyone in our party. I will say that White Oak is clean. I didn't see the kitchen, but judging from the carpets to the silverware and tables... the place still feels very new (and it is). Our waiter Marissa was kind and accommodating. We started with a few choice cocktails which were very good. I especially liked mine but forgot what it was called (it had ginger beer & whisky). For dinner I ordered the White Oak burger which was cooked perfectly. You could tell it was a homemade burger and the components of the burger were on point. However, it was messy to eat and was definitely missing a crunch factor of some kind (aka a vegetable). The side ceasar was nothing to write home about but it was pretty good regardless. My companions this evening ordered the recommended Pastrami Reuben and Carolina Cuban sandwiches. I can't comment on these sandwiches since I did not try them but my fellow yelpers didn't seem to be too crazy about them. They also didn't seem to fond of the fries. I could actually tell they were fairly soggy and tasteless just by looking at them. I like my fries cooked in peanut oil and am not a fan of the type of fries they serve here. Although they did come with a housemade ketchup so that's one plus. To cap the evening we all ordered deserts.. an Irish car bomb cake, a pumpkin creme brulee and apple turnovers with caramel. Again, nothing really wowed us. The deserts were good but I don't think they were good enough that I'd come out of my way to eat here again. But I will say that they do have quite a few beers on tap so if you're looking for a quick bite this is definitely a nice spot. A bit too pricey for what it is but at least the employees, atmosphere and cleanliness are top quality.

My wife and I tried the White Oak Tavern last night as a nearby alternative to Shannon's Pub. We arrived at 5:30PM to avoid possible Saturday evening crowds and chose to be seated inside. The decor was nice albeit a bit dark and the place looked clean. The only drawback that soon became apparent was the family of four seated nearby that included two young children, one of whom screamed every couple of minutes for the entire time we were there. The place has two separate dining areas apart from the bar area. It would be nice if hostesses could be trained to seat diners with young children apart from other diners when possible. The menu is rather short but with an interesting array of dishes. The waiter arrived at our table quickly and took our drink orders. I asked for my usual iced tea with lemon and sweetener. The tea was OK, but the sweetener collection included Truvia but no Splenda. I found the Truvia had a slight off taste. My wife ordered a White Oak burger medium well and I ordered a bowl of corn chowder with a small plate of shrimp and grits. The food arrived in about a half hour during which time we were not offered bread or anything else to nibble on while waiting. Once served, our dinners looked quite appetizing with a nice presentation. My wife's burger was medium well done as ordered, the shrimp and grits were three large shrimp atop two polenta discs with a thick shrimp bisque poured over all. The corn chowder had a white creamy broth with lots of butter floating in it. Looks can be deceiving. The soup was hopelessly bland and as was the hamburger. Salt and pepper were not on any of the tables. The shrimp and shrimp bisque were seasoned better. The waiter proved salt and fresh ground pepper when asked, but seasoning food at the table is not the same as doing so while cooking. Neither my wife nor I use much salt at home, so this can only be that the kitchen here uses little if any. I note that several other reviewers have commented on the blandness of the food here. If you want better pub grub in the Ellicott City area, try Shannon's Pub or drive up to Sykesville and visit E.W. Beck's Restaurant and Pub.

I've been wanting to try The White Oak Tavern since it opened, and finally made it in for brunch in early December. I'm not a huge fan of getting whacked over the head with the farm-to-table superiority complex, but I'm a fan of new American menus and God knows Ellicott City could use a few places that serve more than just Korean baked good. In any event I sat at the bar and found the service pleasant enough, with thankfully no pretentiousness. I ordered the Fall Vegetable hash and found it very satisfying. While I would have liked a greater degree of root vegetables to balance out the potatoes, the potatoes had a really deep roasted flavor and hearty texture. The eggs were a bit inconstant (one had a very loose and undercooked yolk which, while tasty and rich, spilled everywhere and makes you feel like you need to drink it with straw) but neither was overcooked and they added a nice contrast to the crisped veggies. More than anything else is managed to be warming and rib-sticking without being heavy, if that makes sense. The price seemed about right even though some of their other menu items looked overpriced. My dad had the brisket hash and he seemed to like it. I was definitely intrigued enough to want to come back, probably for a salad or a sandwich.

Me and my fiance live in Baltimore City and so finding a good bar in Ellicott City posed a challenge for us. Luckily we stumbled upon this place on yelp and decided to give it a go. We were wowed by their beer selection as soon as we walked through the door. You can sample beers. Yes. Free beer samples. And I thought they'd just give us a sip but they were pretty sizable too. Their apple dumplings are AMAZING They also have so much going on. Just a glance from their menu -- We came on a Tuesday night and there was a painting night going on on the back. Wednesdays are also all day happy hour. Saturdays are bottomless mimosas and sangria for $10 with an order of brunch. Mondays kids eat free after 5 PM. Literally an event for each day. Don't even have kids but I still excited. Tuesday was also keep the glassware day so we got to keep a pint glass from their featured brewer of the day! Service was also terrific. Definitely coming back!! The bar is in a strip mall but don't underestimate it.

Great food Friendly staff Amazing food & beers Live music ......visiting from Hollywood, CA Not disappointed !!!!
(5)Andrew M.
So from my abnormally high number of check-ins here, it's pretty obvious that my first impression was right and I really love this place. Serving, bar staff, and owners are still awesome; they have live music on Fridays, VERY well run, challenging, and entertaining trivia with Rick on Thursdays (come! E = MC Hammer needs more competition); and best of all their new fall seasonal menu just kicked in! Of course, most of you will still order the burger, but do try it! It's a great time to go. Oh yeah and the desserts are ALL incredible and made in-house (ice cream too). You know what to do.
(5)Molly S.
Love this place! Tons of craft beers on tap and good food! Everything is homemade and the menu changes seasonally so it seems like there's always something different to try. My husband and I go a few times a month.
(5)Glenn L.
Came to the tavern early on a Friday nigjt with friends to take advantage of their Happy Hour specials. From 4 to 7pm all 16 ounce beers are $4, and you get 25% off small plates and "bites" We had never been here before, but heard about the restaurant through a discount voucher -though we knew it was not valid during for happy hour specials. The beer selection was extensive and we had trouble narrowing down our choices. The friendly server offered to give us samples which really helped us choose. We ordered our beers and an assortment of i small plates and bites. Everything was enjoyable, especially the veggie mushroom strudel, house made sausage , bowl of nitrate free house cured bacon, and chilli. Overall this was the best happy hour we have exp5. We arr looking forward to returning to explore the rest of the seasonally changing menu.
(5)Chang Y.
Came in for the tuesday night special, burger and fries for $12. Way over priced for the burger they served you. Roll tasted like it was stale and burger was little. The $4 sirloin burger at mcdonalds was tastier and bigger. All in all this place is below average with above average prices. Im told this place is usually busy but with glory days opening soon i think this place is gonna be a second choice.

...seasoning, seasoning, seasoning. This restaurant has great potential, but PLEASE make sure your chefs know how to properly season the food. We dined here a week ago for lunch and ordered several of the small plates to try out. The grilled sweet corn and bacon cheese fries were delicious! The smokey flavor and the natural sweetness from the corn was very pleasing to the pallet. The bacon on the bacon cheese fries was farm fresh thick and chewy, with an amazing hickory flavor. The cheese sauce was creamy, smooth and had the perfect balance of flavors. The garlic knots and mambo wings did not fare so well. The garlic knots, while warm, soft and fresh, had no garlic flavor at all. As plain bread, they were perfect. The mambo wings are not even close to how mambo wings are supposed to taste. The wing itself had no seasoning that I could taste, and the "mambo" sauce was neither spicy or sweet. It had more of a ketchup flavor... no bueno. Our cocktails were spot on, and I would definitely recommend this establishment for happy hour...but that's all.
(3)Yaofu Z.
Four star for the food and two star for the service. We came here for Sunday brunch and the place only has a hand full of tables occupied. We ordered chocolate pancakes, sour dough toasts, over median eggs and sausage. Frankly speaking, I like our food. Chocolate pancakes are fluffy and flavorful. Over median eggs are cooked perfectly. I have been to so many brunch places that can not cook the eggs right. The toasts and the sausage are somewhat mediocre. But that is OK. The waiter we got is a young guy and he seems unhappy from the very beginning. It took a long time for him to take our order and it took a long time for the food to come. We were very hungry and he is nowhere to find. When asked about the food, he became quite defensive. I do not agree with my companion about questioning the server about the food in the way he did. But it would be nice for the waiter to say something like "I apologize for the delay, let me check with the kitchen". Instead he said something like "You definitely did not wait that long" and left. I do not think it will bring your customers back by winning an argument.
(3)Theresa N.
Great food and service. I had the corn dog with house made sausage and house made condiments. I also had the seasonal watermelon salad. Both were very good, although I think the salad could have been simpler and still had the same impact. The peach apricot pie a la mode was amazing. The season farm to table menu paired with a large variety of lovely things to drink, including craft beers, cider and cocktails, makes this restaurant a winner.
(5)Aladdin I.
It's been open for a couple months now and there has been more updates to it. The Decor and seating has been improved and is even more accommodating. Also the staff is very friendly, caring and better trained. I did not try the food again, but I did like the pricing on drinks. I really like the addition of musicians over the weekends, it makes it an appealing late night spot to have a few drinks. I'll be back to try the food again soon!

What a difference between the old Jilly's and the new White Oak Tavern. They've opened the space up, vastly improved the food, and amped up the beer selection. We've been for brunch and dinner, and have been impressed both times. Brunch: tasty Bacon Bloody Mary with bacon-infused vodka, bacon and olive garnish, Old Bay rim, and plenty of spice in the house-made bloody mary mix. The pulled brisket hash with poached eggs hit the spot, too. Crispy home fries, tender shreds of beef, and fresh eggs. We ate in the bar and service was prompt and attentive. Dinner: Out on the "beer garden" patio. They have shared bench seating out here, but they tend to seat parties at separate tables rather than filling a table before moving on to the next. Had the house-made pickles with pickled peppers, cucumber, watermelon, grapes, and snap peas. I love pickles as a bar snack, and these were great with beer. The banh-mi sandwich was put together well with roast pork and pork terrine, spicy sriracha mayo, and plenty of pickled veg. Fries are hand cut, skins on, crispy golden brown, and served with tangy homemade ketchup. Prices are pretty reasonable, too. I was worried that this would end up being one of those overly precious gastropubs that takes itself way too seriously. But they've done a really good job of putting together a solid menu using local produce, with an able kitchen and competent waitstaff. Bravo!

Let me just start off with the bar. Was waiting for friends so I sat myself at the bar to have a drink while waiting. Large choice of beers which was nice and Travis (the bartender) was super friendly and helpful. Introduced himself, addressed me by my first name and made sure I was doing ok pretty often. The food was great, I had the sweet potatoe biscuit sammich. The pork belly and over easy egg on top was dynamite. My gf got the cowbird burger which was super juicy and good. All in all, great beer/food/staff and nice specials. I'll deff be back soon
(5)Tiffany G.
Have been wanting to check this place out for a while after hearing so many great things - and it didn't disappoint! I had the steak but it seems everyone else had the burger. My steak was great but now I'm gonna have to go back and check out the burger. Need to go check out one of the beer tastings soon!

I am bumping this place up a star after I have since tried breakfast, and another dinner. The Sunday brunch starts at 10 am. We went for Fathers Day. We had a vast assortment....almost to the point of being embarrassing. I tried the chocolate chip sour dough pancakes with fresh whip cream. Dare I say...those were the bomb.com ! Ok moving on....to killer biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, organic-nitrate free bacon, fresh oj, a few mimosas...and yeah a coffee! The breakfast was great!! Plan on about $10 per person and the mimosas were unlimited for a set price. So now on to my third visit. I tried some infused vodka drinks that were quite tasty. We had the shrimp hush puppies (pretty good) and I had a grilled/ham and cheese...dressed up of course. The fries are pretty killer here. I still worry some about this menu but the food I have gotten is very good. Obviously I keep returning..

So my wife and I decided to give The White Oak Tavern a try this evening. The "GOOD": the beer list and atmosphere are very nice. Service was decent. Outside seating is always nice. The "OK": the food. Not really good. My wife had a chicken salad sandwich and I had the lamb gyro. The lamb was very well cooked but underseasoned. The pita bread was very dry and "crumbly" and it was really light on the Tzatziki sauce. My wife had trouble eating her sandwich because her bread was overly toasted (burnt) on one side and cut the roof of her mouth. My son's chicken was inedible and dry. The fries were good though! The "BAD" my four year old son asked for a side of cut up carrot sticks to go with his kids meal- not cooked, basically what you get on the side of an order of chicken wings. Apparently these five carrot sticks cost five dollars here? It literally consisted of less than one carrot that could be bought for 10 cents in any grocery store (and they were old and yellow)... I am not sure if this was some sort of specialty carrot, but wish that I got a heads up prior to ordering. They cost more than my beer and more than his kid's meal to begin with! In short, we won't be going back. Dinner for two adults and one child that consisted of two sandwiches, one kid's meal and a few drinks should not cost $58 ($70 after all said and done). Especially when none of the food was especially good. I am also surprised that the reviews for this establishment are this high. I have also heard negative reviews from friends who have eaten here, but figured maybe they had one bad experience. I can report that our experience was the same.
(2)Lauren B.
I have been to this restaurant several times. I have to say the first two times I was impressed and wanted to go back. The past couple of times I have not been so impressed but I thought I would give it one last chance. Well that was a mistake. We ordered the barbecue wings for an appetizer. These were the worst wings I've ever tasted. I had the sloppy Joe which was decent. my husband had the steak which was average at best. We ordered the kids macaroni and cheese for my daughter and there is no way a child would have eaten that macaroni. The cheese seem to be more of a fancy cheese and a little too strong for a child's taste. The first couple of times I got there Moscow Mule to drink and they were delicious. This time I was not that impressed. so, unfortunately we will not be dining here again.
(1)Vicky D.
I'd really give this place 3.5 stars because it was pretty good, but there were some executional flaws. Three people in our group ordered burgers, and I got mine medium and the others got medium well. Well, what ended up coming out was 2 mediums and 1 medium well, which I ended up getting. Not a huge deal since the meat they used wasn't too lean, but I know a lot of other people would be pickier about it and send it back. There was no pink in it at all. Luckily it was seasoned wonderfully, and the fries were good too. I actually liked that it wasn't massive; I was able to finish it and most of the fries without feeling like I was going to burst. As Chris B. stated, their in-house ketchup was also actually pretty good. Shared some apps and dessert which were pretty good too, but nothing that was must-have. I'd definitely come back for happy hour and maybe for some of their events like trivia night!

I expected more. With such a creative menu and excellent reviews, I was really looking forward to my dining experience at The White Oak Tavern. I started off my meal with a delicious blueberry cocktail, that sneaked up on you with a powerful punch. The pickles arrived shortly after. Carrots, grapes, cauliflower & pineapple. Though they had a nice crunch to them and the fruit, was unexpectedly good, with pickles taking a side line on the menu; I was anticipating something a bit more standout - perhaps the presentation could have been better, than simply plopping them onto my plate. With the promise of "house made cured smoked brisket," I was anticipating great promise with my reuben. The Russian dressing combined with the greased grilling of my sandwich, overwhelmed the sauerkraut and masked the flavors of my brisket. The fries were similar to those at Five Guys, though Five Guys have a bit more flavor, crisp and salt. On a side note, the accompanying ketchup, had a pleasant touch of smoke added to it - a nice change from Heinz. The pumpkin crème brulee arrived in a small ramekin with its sugar crackling coating on top and a smooth pumpkin mousse underneath. It was nice and light ending to my meal.

Came for lunch. Sat at a high top by the bar. Nice space and friendly service. High quality food. Limited lunch menu if you're not in the mood for brunch but was still happy with our choice since we are from out of town. Download the app for $5 and $10 coupons that can be used immediately.

We had another great meal at White Oak.Tavern. We have been many times since it opened and every experience has been fantastic. The menu changes seasonally and it's great to have new options offered so often. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The Happy Hour during the week offers discounted drinks and small plates. Two of our favorite items on the menu are the Caesar salad and the always delicious burger - the best around! We will be back again soon!

We love the food here! It's a bit pricey for a bar-restaurant but you can taste the freshness of it and can tell it's homemade so that semi-justifies it. Their beer selection is great too. There's not much in the way of 'ambiance' but it serves its purpose and is overall a really good 'night out' place. They have outdoor seating too, so we're going to see how that is :) It can be tough to find good bars in Columbia (being a little outside the convenience of Baltimore and DC), so it's nice to have a place close to home.

White oak is definitely a hidden gem in Ellicott City. The food is great and the drinks are unique. Their menu isn't overwhelming and they change it occasionally going along with the seasons. Their salads are my favorite! It's perfect for a last minute date spot or a casual dinner with friends and family. Definitely a great spot for foodies.

We have been meaning to try this place and finally took the opportunity when we found a DoubleTake offer online. This is a tough review to write. There are some good aspects to the WOT, but it just misses the mark in many areas. Food: 3.5 stars. They get an extra half star for using locally sourced ingredients and those are identified on the menu. The menu is very limited, though. I had the White Oak Tavern burger. I ordered it cooked to medium, but it showed up somewhere between medium-well and well. The "White Oak Tavern sauce" was kind of strange tasting. The brioche bun was OK, but a little dry. Sautéed onions were a nice touch. The hand-cut fries were good as well. My wife ordered the Panzanella salad, which was mostly croutons, but she said tasted good overall, with the fresh mozzarella and perfectly ripe tomatoes being a big plus. Beer: 3 stars. Decent selection with about 30 on tap. What really brings this score down, though, is that the server/bartender didn't know much about beer and the write-ups they print on the menu are directly taken from the drivel on TapHunter. Another negative point: my wife ordered a "Tart of Darkness" from The Bruery. It was served as a 6 oz. pour. 6 oz. Other bars in the area serve these types of beers in 10 oz pours. 6 oz. is little more than a tasting splash. Ambiance/environment: 2.5 stars. This is where the place is strange. With the huge windows in the front of the restaurant, I have no idea why the interior feels so dark and dim...but it does. The white oak on the walls is a nice touch, but the dimness makes it seem like I'm drinking beers in my buddy's basement man-cave. Another anomaly are the taps: they have the beautiful wooden taps associated with each of the craft beers...mounted on the wall. They don't use them. Instead they use plain steel unmarked taps. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, just weird. The entry area includes four tables that just seem kind of stuck there. The place was empty, with no greeter, so we went directly to the bar. Overall, the place is just not very comfortable. Service: 2 stars. Efficient, but soulless overall. Bartender/server didn't seem like she wanted to be there and didn't check back with us regarding our food or drink until it looked like we needed another beer. She also didn't know much about beer, an unforgivable sin when the establishment markets itself as a place "where hand crafted food and beer are celebrated." Wasn't much celebrating going on in here. When the server brought the food she asked if there was anything else we needed. I responded with a request for mayonnaise (intended to be used with my fries). She came back with, "there's already White Oak Tavern sauce ON the burger!" When I indicated that the mayo was for the fries, I got a sigh and a roll of the eyes. If you don't really want to know if there's anything else we need, don't bother asking the question. Overall, I would give the WOT 2.5 stars, but as Yelp doesn't allow half-stars, I'll give them the gift of rounding up rather than down. I would return to WOT if I lived in the very immediate area, with a Groupon or other deal, but with much better alternatives in the EC/Columbia area (Frisco being the best option around), I wouldn't make an effort to return otherwise. A shame, really, as this place has tons of potential.

Visiting from Austin, Texas. The beer selection is good but the veggie burger is awful. There really are not many options for non red meat eaters. They were very nice thoughts and my friend had a bbq burger she really liked.

Food: 3 stars--The menu provided a nice variety of winter farm to table options. There was something to appeal to everyone's interests. Unfortunately, many of the dishes were under seasonsed...the meat definitely could have used additional seasoning and the vegetables came out cold. The mashed potatoes were probably the best item on the plate, and the cauliflower had a nice nutty flavor, but was cold. Everyone in our group raved about the burger, though no one liked the in house ketchup. Again---likely due to lack of seasoning...it tasted like it was crushed tomatoes straight out of a can..a little vinegar and sugar to cut the acidity would have helped improve the flavor. One in our group took matters into her own hands and ran across the street to safeway and brought back a bottle of ketchup....had the in house ketchup been better prepared, this may not have been an issue. Beer: 5 stars---Fabulous beer menu and taste tests pre ordering are allowed--Thank goodness, because i've ordered some very hoppy beers because taste testing wasn't allowed---not the case, everything ordered was fabulous!!! Service: I'm not going to give this a rating...It started out VERY poorly....I made a reservation for our group on Tuesday for a Saturday at 5:30p. When we arrived, i found that they had tried to squeeze 9 of us into this small round corner booth...yeah it may have fit the 5 guys in our group and that was about it. When we asked for larger space we were met with unnecessary attitude. After some insistence we moved to a long table in the bar area which was much more suitable space. We had a fabulous attentive waiter with personality who made the evening much better. Looking forward to giving it another go with the release of the spring menu!

I tried this place during the last restaurant week and just wasn't impressed. The food was not memorable or I'd have visited again. Maybe it was just that the selected menu for restaurant week wasn't good. I might give it another try some day.
(2)Norman W.
Been there twice. Menu is lacking in so many ways. They try to get by with being different but it us not enough. The waiters do not know the beers. The TVs are too small Needs some help in many ways.
(3)Mark T.
Great place for craft drafts. I had the DUCLAW HOP CONTINUUM #2 MOSAIC RED IPA, and this was the best IPA I have had in a while, very flavorful without the alcohol content being over the top. A must try for the IPA aficionado. Regarding the food: I had the brisket Sloppy Joe with salad greens, and while the brisket was not smokehouse quality, it was still very good. Know that Thursday is trivia night, and table seating is reserved for tournament players so be prepared to sit at the bar or high tables. Growlers are available, so I will be returning soon for some more Continuum #2 for home comsumption.
(4)Tracy H.
The menu changes so the food is unpredictable. One time it can be great then the next not so great. Atmosphere is good regardless. Never had problem with service. Always friendly and accommodating.

Went today with our 2 year old twins for lunch. We were quite impressed! Food was amazing, fantastic atmosphere, great staff, and reasonable prices. Downsides: no changing area for kids in the extremely clean bathrooms, not too many booths (which is only needed when we come in with a passed out kid), and we were being bothered by a couple of flies (they didn't bother me really but our kids were scared of them which made it interesting). That being said we will definitely be back with our kids and look forward to checking out the various specials they have throughout the week! Thanks Collin for the awesome service!
(4)Michele W.
Great beer and food menu. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the offerings. The food was good but, I felt like the seasonings were very subtle.
(3)Theresa C.
Service was lackluster from the hostess to our server. They were not friendly or welcoming. Our food was disappointing. The mac & cheese was extremely bland, it just tasted like cooked noodles with bread crumbs. I got the ham & cheese sandwich which was incredibly greasy and again, the ham was bland. Fries were awesome but the ketchup they made was odd tasting. My fiancée got the burger which was weirdly greasy but dry. We both barely touched our meals and had to go get something else to eat. The decor is a nice upgrade from Jilly's, but I wish they had stayed! Their food was much better.
(2)Big E.
Food was pretty good. I like the variety and different types of menu items. The craft beer selection is excellent. The only reason I am giving 3 stars is because of the portion size. For what you pay, you get very little. It might fill up the average child or pre-teen. Expensive when you considering how little you are getting. I ordered the fish and chips and it came with 3 small strips of fish. The fish was cooked perfectly but there was hardly any of it. Again, the food is good but this place will not fill you up.

We had been meaning to go to this place for some time now, and it was definitely worth it. It's rare to find a casual bar or tavern that serves farm fresh food. The Vegetable Pasta with mushroom ragout and brussel sprouts was fantastic, as was the White Oak Tavern Burger. We also had the chopped salad and pumpkin soup which were great as well. The beer and craft cocktail selection is extensive. The service was phenomenal; our waitress offered suggestions and was patient as we sampled our way through the many beer choices. The Apple Dumpling dessert was the perfect conclusion to the meal. The restaurant is located in a nondescript strip mall in Ellicott City, but the ambiance and decor inside is great. There are tv's throughout the restaurant and it was packed on a Friday night. They do trivia on certain nights, along with paint nights and other themed events like all-you-can-eat oysters. Good place for a night out with friends, family or a date night. I highly recommend! They are unveiling their Winter menu next week and also celebrating their one year anniversary at the end of January.
(5)Dana J.
This was my first time here and it was pretty good. The food was good not excellent. The service was good not excellent. They had $10 unlimited mimosas with the purchase of a brunch entree that I wish was cheaper but I still got it. There was nothing that would make me come back but nothing that would keep me away either. It was just good.
(4)Mary M.
This place was so-so - just average. Cute atmosphere, nice staff, but I don't know that I'll go back. I wouldn't avoid it.. It just didn't give me any reason to return.
(3)Craig H.
Tried this new place with my parents and its a hit. Its a farm to table joint and very good. This place has very spacious inside and has a very nice vibe with a great bar space and an ample outside seating area. Our server, Zach was very nice and easy to get along with. I heard this place had a few micro brews and thought it might be good. I was right, they sell flights with prices based on normal size price. All the beers were great, but I really enjoyed the Monocacy Riot Rye. The food was great to start and really recommend the bowl of bacon and the hushpuppies. The Bahn Mi is great and spicy and burger was great but its the fries that hit the spot with their homemade ketchup. Definitely coming back soon!!
(5)J S.
Yummy! I'm not a foodie, but enjoyed the foodie twist on some standard fare. Great hamburger, kale salad and gumbo. Rich flavors and well presented. Very tasty and I didn't even have a beer from their extensive list, which they also make pairing suggestions on their menu. It was a little pricey but the cost matched the quality. Howard County, home of the chain restaurant, needs more of these unique restaurants.
(5)Barbara H.
Had brunch there today and it was fabulous! Great to have a farm to table casual restaurant nearby! Try it, you'll like it
(5)Jake L.
The location is a bit odd, in a dead shopping center. They do have a good amount of craft beer to pick from, a plus. Our server was great, the dude was spot on with everything. The food, well, could really be better. My fried fish sandwich was a little too greasy. The fish itself is rather small. The tar-tar sauce is a bit too much. Other than that, everything was great.
(4)Jody M.
We had a lovely brunch here on a Sunday morning. I had heard about how they used locally sourced veggies and meats and was happy to find it was also a delicious selection of foods. I had a brisket hash with poached eggs and red potatoes. Ask for a side of the smoked ketchup, it's amazing! My three year old was in heaven eating the freshly made donuts with powdered sugar and jam. My husband had a burger with bacon and he let me try the bacon and I can honestly say it was some of the best I've ever had.... slightly sweet with a caramelized flavor was so unique. I can't wait to go back!
(5)Kelly R.
My friend and I went there for paintnite and decided to eat dinner there first before the event. We ordered the spicy wings and they were extremely bland along with the bleu cheese dressing they served with the wings. Neither of us wanted to finish them but we were hungry so we kept eating. After the wings we ordered fries that came with two condiments--garlic aioli and their house made ketchup. The aioli was bland--it some how had less flavor then just plain mayonnaise which I thought was odd. How does that even happen? Their house made ketchup tasted like tomato paste they took right out of a can and served it in a ramekin. I am not sure I will come to this restaurant again-- On a brighter note the service was good!

I have been here for dinner and drinks a few times now. After the first visit, I knew immediately it would turn into my favorite place in the area. Their specialty drinks are fun and yummy. Their regular drinks are fairly priced. The beer selection is far better than a regular bar and is always changing. They're open prettymuch until you decide to leave, they are never too packed or too empty, and the food is incredible. Did I mention the food is incredible? All of it? Okay, the pickled watermelon wasn't my thing, but the person who actually ordered it raved. Empanadas, bahn mi, sausages, weird spicy green beans, burger, sandwiches....everything we've tried has legitimately surprised us at how good it is and they serve all menu items pretty late before switching to small plates. Everything has a fun twist on the usual. The servers are friendly, attentive, and funny. The decor is really great for a low-key night out with some friends. There was a live singer there one night that was quite good. Thank you for coming into my life, White Oak.

We came here for lunch at a weird time on a Sunday, 3pm or so, and the place was pretty deserted. Very nice on the inside though, clean & modern. The SO had a cocktail that she reported as being awesome. Appetizers were great, entrees were great (I had a salad), and they have some GF options on the menu, which is appreciated. We also tried a seasonal dessert (pumpkin flan) which wasn't my favorite, but she loved it. Service was excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable.

New spot in Ellicott City where Jilly's used to be. Recommended by a beer lover friend. They have lots of good beers on tap and the menu had just a few offerings, probably because of their farm-to-table approach. Everything tasted made from scratch, so I understand how they wouldn't keep a huge variety of ingredients in stock. If you appreciate good quality food and beer, this place is for you. If you're used to chain restaurants and Bud Light, you probably wont find it too compelling. Had veggie pot pie and braised kale; hubby had gumbo. We were both very pleased with the taste and the reasonable portions that didn't have us leaving feeling like manatees.
(4)Zoe G.
Went there for a quick snack in the afternoon, we got a few appetizers and a few beers. The beer selection was awesome and the bar tender was nice and knowledgeable about helping to choose one. The food was good, nothing to over the top but good. It was very quiet, but could see the potential for it being a fun place to hang out.

I wanted to love this place, but unfourtuntley would not come back ever again! I am so confused by all the great reviews, maybe my experience isn't usual but it sure made a lasting impression on us. I feel as my family and I are at a completely different restaurant then my fellow yelpers!!!! We went on a Wednesday evening around 5pm. The bar was busy but we were the only table in the dining room. I figured this was just because it was early and people were still getting off work. Our waiter was prompt and friendly and took our drink orders. We ordered an appetizer. Don't remember the exact name but it was the cheese and salami plate. It took around 15-20 minutes to come out which was a little long I felt but it was the only highlight of our entire meal. The portion sizes were very small, but the quality was good. I ordered the brisket entree, 2 other people in our party ordered the gyro and my husband ordered the pulled pork. Note: My husband wanted the blackened catfish but they did not have any seafood items available and I quote "we just started our new menu and are working things out". Red flag right off the bat, but we went ahead put our order in and waited, and waited and waited. About 45 minutes for our food. I mind waiting at a busy restaurant or for a quality meal but this was far from it. My brisket entree came with lentils and carrots. The lentils were charred black and awful, the brisket was tough and a very poor cut of meat. My husbands meal was extremely salty but over all "Ok". (He said mission BBQ would've been better!) My parents got the Gyro's and the meat was so tough they could hardly chew it. It was my birthday meal, so I didn't want to complain but my mom was so unhappy she told the waiter. He sent the manager over and she did apologize and say that the menu was being worked out still and comped an entree. I would not go back here based off the poor quality food.

Best restaurant I have ever ate at. We have become quite the regulars. Their menu changes with the seasons and is very unique. The best tasting meals around. Their bread and ingredients are all local. And all baked goods are made here by their baker. They use King Arthur flour for everything! There is no favorite food because everything is delicious. I just had a pork belly sand which in a sweat potato biscuit. So savory and buttery and yum. They even have gluten free and vegetarian options. Man I can go on and on about this place but the only way to truly understand what your missing is to come here and experience it yourself. Oh yea and Saturday and Sunday bottomless mimosa or sangria and Bloody Mary till 3pm!
(5)Doug F.
Craft beer list was terrific. Service was prompt and attentive. Food was about average for their price range, nothing too fancy. We'll be back!
(4)Hollis B.
Really tasty food and pretty space. All told, our party tried the burger, chicken paprika, Caesar salad, baby beet salad, andouille sausage on dirty rice, and the cajun gumbo. We actually liked everything. I thought the gumbo was really delicious with some nice heat and the burgers were so good. I'm really looking forward to dining here again.

I went there last night as part of a group of six. This was my first time there when it was packed, but I have eaten at the bar once and gotten carry-out once as well. The food was good. The beer list is quite good. The food has been consistently good. The wings are the best bar food they offer. The burger was good but it wasn't a world beater. The fries were a little underwheming, but they are house made. I say underwhelming because they were oversaturated with grease. My major issue was/is the service. It is consistently inconsistent. The staff forgot several drinks for the group and the staff (aside from the manager that was helping with the food service) didn't really give you the warm and fuzzies. Quite honestly, they looked like they didn't want to be there. They were young, so I can give them a pass, but I hope it is not like that the next time.
(4)Risa H.
I like this place. Fun menu, locally sourced ingredients, great burgers, salads, cocktails, gray beer selection. Go.

We went here around 4 pm on a Sunday afternoon. Party of 4 - dishes tried were Southwestern Burger, the Breakfast brunch special, the Catfish Po'Boy sandwich, and the biscuits and gravy. Two got Bloody marys, 1 white Sangria. Bloody Marys were WAY too peppery, even after being cut with additional tomato juice. Since their tomato juice is made in-house, it's not thick like the commercial stuff, so I think the bartender needs to adjust the seasonings. White Sangria was ok, loaded with fresh fruit, but just sort of tasted like white wine. The traditional recipe with brandy and a splash of juice would have made this shine. Then again, this restaurant does feature beer, so next time we'll go with the wide and varied microbrew menu! Everyone loved their choices, except the Catfish po'Boy, which came on a thick hoagie roll. The roll overpowered the sandwich, and I wound up taking the top half off, to try and taste something more than just bread. The catfish was sparse - not a whole fillet, but it appeared to be small bits cut and breaded (smaller than catfish nuggets) The whole sandwich was sparse - a smattering of shredded lettuce, some remoulade...underwhelming, compared to the other three entrees. The southwestern burger was huge, and the green salsa a nice addition. The biscuit was light and fluffy, the sausage gravy full of meat. The brunch breakfast was hearty, the eggs moist. Contrary to other reviews, I LOVED the ketchup - maybe they got the recipe right, but it was thick, tomatoey, slightly sweet, and really, really good with the hand cut fries. Plusses: EVERYTHING is local - yay support your local farmer. They make everything there, including smoking their own bacon, making all their condiments - Kudos!! Seasonal menu - YAY for variety and not the same old thing. Reasonably priced, food for the most part is good. Minuses: Dining tables are small - The first one they sat us at, we left and went to a booth. With plates, drinks, water, salads, etc. you'd be hard pressed to find any room ON the table, much less elbow room AT the table. Don't get the Catfish Po'Boy. It lives up to its name. Bartenders need to gain a bit more experience working with fresh ingredients.

I had dinner here on Wednesday, I had the Keilbasa and chicken sausage with mashed potatoes with summer squash. Everything served here is from local farms and providers. The meal was delicious. The potatoes were mashed perfect, still some chunks and red skin, perfectly seasoned. THe summer squash was great too, not over cooked and mushy. I am very picky about my squash I like some texture and a little crunch to it. My friend had the meatloaf with mashed Potatoes and green beans. THe meatloaf was very good too, with a nice sweet bar-b-que type glaze. Her green beans were cooked how I like them, a little crunchy, my friend prefers her soft and mushy. The seasoning on all of it was perfect. We each had a piece of peach pie for desert. Just like mom used to make. Perfect! I just returned from Sunday Brunch/lunch and this meal was just as good as dinner. We started with the donut holes (little fried dough rolled in cinamon sugar, they melt in your mouth! My husband and father had breakfast, homemade bacon, and sausage with eggs and homemade bread(toast) served with peach butter. They ate everything! I had the southwestern burger and fries and enjoyed every bite. I am so happy to have a new restaurant to frequent on Route 40. Its so nice to try some place new. We will definitely return and I have raved about this find to several friends and co-workers. I love that they are not only a small business but support other small businesses in the area.

I first heard about this place when I went to a Heavy Seas Bacon fest. They had a bacon bowl they were show casing at the event. I recently moved to Ellicott City and decided to check it out. My boyfriend and I went on a Thursday and they had a trivia night going on in the corner of the place. They have an extensive beer list. Tuesday night I saw they have a promotion where you get to keep the pint glass your beer is served in. I'm excited because I think I found another decent bar near my new apartment. The food we got was very tasty. We started with the Beef Piroshki. It was different but delicious. The beef was savory, the pastry flaky and buttery, the mustard a bit spicy and the pickled cabbage provided a zing. The combination was quite good. They had more appetizers that peaked my interest (I think Wednesday's promotion is all day happy hour with discounted apps so I will have to go back to try them all)! My boyfriend had the fish and chips which he said was underwhelming but their hand cut fries where on point. I looked over the dessert menu but ended up not ordering anything. They again had some interesting pairings that were more adventurous than your typical desert menu like their Apple pie with the cheddar cheese pie crust. I am definitely looking forward checking out the rest of their beer and food menu!

Service was attentive and friendly. Food was amazing, well priced , and authentic! Love that all of the ingredients are fresh and local, it makes a difference. Beer selection was fresh and diverse. 5/5 would reccomend to others.
(5)Trevor R.
If you like good food and beer, this is your place. This is not the typical pub fare where the kitchen takes frozen food from a box and dumps it in a fryer. The kitchen here uses high quality ingredients, prepares the dishes in house, and the end product reflects that care. The food here is very good and priced reasonably for what you're getting, I find it to be of good value for farm to table. If you're a person who is looking for quantity over quality, this is not your place. The restaurant is split between a table dining section and bar section with a few high tops where both areas are open to each other. It's a bit like an upscale sports bar, with televisions scattered about, but they've done it in a way that it's not in your face and could easily be ignored if you're not interested in watching a game. Nice enough for a date night out, but casual enough for weeknight dining. They have a nice selection of draft craft beers (20+). I believe they change the pour size based on their cost of the beer so that all beers are around $6.50 once they get to the customer. Service hasn't been the best when I've been here, but this is a great addition to the dining scene in Howard County.

Went here based on the yelp reviews with my coworkers since there are not a lot of good options nearby. I really think the menu is fun, and the place itself is unassuming on the outside but pretty nice on the inside. I had the catfish poboy and fries which were great. The catfish was fresh and lightly fried with a little crunch. The fries were good too - you can tell they were freshly made from potatoes in the kitchen. Also got their housemade pink lemonade which was pretty good - almost a little sweet, and I like sweet. Apparently they are known for their burger, which is cooked to order. My coworkers both got it and seemed happy. You can either get salad or fries with each, and the salad looked good too - not just cheap lettuce or romaine, but real salad greens. They also had amazing looking desserts and the waitress told me its because they have a in house pastry chef! I took the cornmeal blueberry buckle and s'more bar home with me. The buckle was buttery and nice, and the s'more held up very well - almost like a s'more cookie - yum! I hope to go back for happy hour since the drinks look unique and fun too!

The beer selection was great! The food looked and smelled great. But the service was SO SLOW; it stopped us from ordering food and more beers because it took so long to get service on the first round. This was on a Monday night. Full bar, but not busy. And even with 4 wait staff and 2 bartenders, service was awful!
(2)Shannon K.
First time reviewers but we had to give mad props to the awesome food and service we had tonight. The best were the bloody mary fried oyster appetizers. Light, crispy and juicy. Tart pickled celery on the side (sounds weird, but it was yummy ). The jerk wings were large and meaty tho not the same level as the other choices. Turnip apple soup, creamy and flavorful. Fried fish just what it should be. Knowledgeable and friendly bar staff. Will be back for another round.
(5)Samantha B.
This place is AMAZING! I love their staff and the decor is so cool. The food is also really good. I love their Brie and apple grilled cheese and basically all their apps. I very much so recommend this place!

Sorry to say- really not impressed. First off, they lost our reservation that I had made 2 weeks ago. My friends arrived before me, so I did not personally witness this, but the hostess didn't make too much effort to rectify the situation until my friends started to complain. Only then they were seated. My friend and I both sent our drinks back because they were too sweet. He got some melon drink and I had a lemon vodka mixed with ginger beer drink. Neither was good. Took a long time to get our appetizers. We had cornbread and the cheese plate. No one took the time to describe the different cheeses to us. Not a huge foul, but just disappointing. I had the fried chicken special. The chicken was horribly over cooked and dry. They wouldn't let me substitute out the side dishes, so I was stuck with puréed sweet potatoes that looked and tasted like baby food. The kale side dish was tasty. And I'm not a big fan of kale. My friends had the fish special and the hangar steak. They both said their food was fine, but not terribly exciting. Dessert was the most successful. I had the chocolate bread pudding which was delicious. My friends both enjoyed their apple pie and the cookies and cream. We waited forever to get our check. I finally flagged down a bus boy and then our check was delivered by someone not our waitress. The service was very slow in general. And the decor was unimpressive for the prices. The prices are too high for this place to be so mediocre. I know they only just opened recently, so hopefully they can iron out their issues. Sadly, my first impression was such that I will not be returning. Too expensive for such a disappointing meal.

I came here for a surprise birthday party. The reservation was for 9 of us plus a baby. The table provided for us would fit 5 maybe 6 comfortably. The manager was very unfriendly and did not care to help. Luckily, the hostess was kind and moved us to a larger table. The manager scowled at us from afar. After we were seated, we had a wonderful server named Zack. The beer selection was pretty good and they let you sample any beer that you want before you pay. The food selection is limited. I was impressed that everything is farm fresh. I was not impressed however, by the high prices of the food. I ordered the hamburger for $14. The sides offered with it was a Caesar salad, a garden salad or French fries. I chose the salad but quickly changed my mind after the server informed me that the salad did not include tomatoes. He informed me that it was fresh mixed greens (basically lettuce only). I changed my mind and ordered fries. When the meal came out, I noticed that the small side of ketchup looked different. When I tasted it, it was GOD awful. It tasted like they took a can of unsalted diced Tomatoes and smashed it to make ketchup. I sat there disgusted for a minute before I decided to run to, yes, run to Safeway across the parking lot and get a Heinz Ketchup. When I returned, my table was extremely excited. The hamburger had great flavor but the French fries definitely needed The Heinz ketchup. We were told that the chef likes people to try sauces, but the server admitted to us that people ask for ketchup every single day. It was great with Heinz. Fried chicken was one of the specials of the night, and the two people Who got it did not really like it. It was overcooked and the skin was dry. Other things are okay though. Overall, the place was nice. It is not really baby friendly( no changing table) but I should have realized this from the name of the restaurant. I would go again, but I would bring my own ketchup.

Our experience with White Oak Tavern was spotty at best. Like another reviewer, I think it's fair to give them a two star review for service despite a decent menu. The beer list is very good for the area. I did not have a cocktail, but the cocktail menu seemed imaginative. They were "out of" one of our first options for food. This is typically a red flag for me when trying new restaurants, especially considering that their menu is relatively small. The menu options that we did eventually decide on turned out to be decent, above average in my opinion. Service was slow, though the restaurant was not busy at all. We ran into an issue during payment with a CBS Local Offer promotional coupon. Similar to a Groupon, we paid $15 for the CBS offer and it was good for $30 worth of food. Our total bill fell just short of the $30 mark, and the bar manager refused to honor the coupon. There was no mention in the fine print of a minimum order anywhere on the ticket, and I have been in this situation in the past using other Groupons without an issue. The bar manager was unwilling to work with us and somewhat argumentative, insisting that it is implied that you must spend $30. This is true for some online deals such as ones sponsored by restaurant.com , but the minimum purchase is displayed in the fine print in such cases. It is absolutely not true for the CBS offer in question. He could have also just added a misc fee to the tab to bring it to $30 instead of going through the ordeal and making us feel uncomfortable in front of other patrons. We begrudgingly ordered a small side item to reach our $30 quota in lieu of further embarrassing ourselves. The last minute order took entirely too long to prepare, and I couldn't help but feel like that was on purpose. We will not be returning.

I dig it. Great beer selection (though we didn't understand why they put a 7% beer in a 10oz snifter - usually reserved for high ABV beers), and great food. Service is decent, but usually friendly. We'll be badck.

4 hungry people on a weekend willing to try out a new place for dinner. I wanted to like this place: The service was uneven Entre dinners are quite price inflated for a local brewpub. Beer selection is fantastic. Very limited selection, unless burgers are for you. Rework the menu with more price friendly options and they can make it. This is the burbs afterall!

Free-range, maple glazed pork chops, some funky baked bean concoction and a double IPA? Can you say, MAN-TASTIC? Sure, it's more expensive than Chili's, but I knew that going in, so I just threw down my card and enjoyed not gagging on the food. I hadn't believed there was a big difference between standard restaurant meats and the farm-2-table stuff until I visited White Oak Tavern. I have to say I've never tasted pork that tender and flavorful. The natural flavors of the meat were enhanced by the ingredients and all the flavors popped, rather than just tasting salt and spices. Additionally, the place is just cool. They've got a thousand beers I've never heard of and a fairly extensive wine list. The decor is modern, but it feels cozy at the same time, and the new owners obviously put some love (and money) into some nice upgrades. The staff appeared to be a little overwhelmed, as it was their first week in business, but they were all sincere and trying to remain attentive, so they get a pass. There's no other place like this around, and I'm excited to come back. I figure it'll only get better as time goes on.

I had been meaning to post this a little sooner but only recently got the chance. My wife and I went to here about a week ago and we had nothing but good things to say after our experience here. We went on a Wednesday night around 6 so that we could take advantage of their happy hour. 4$ beer, rail, and wine drinks. Our server's name was Zack and he did an excellent job taking care of us. I got a Ommegang Rare V and my wife had one of the House Wines, a Merlot, I believe. I ordered the White Oak Burger and my wife had the Veggie Pot Pie, both of which were extraordinary. They really did a wonderful job on both of the plates, and their toppings for the burger were very good. I probably would not have ever chosen to put arugula or caramelized onions on a burger, i'm a lettuce and tomato guy, but it ended up being delightful. My wife also said she really enjoyed her veggie pot pie as well. The best part of the meal was, of course, the dessert! My wife and I ordered a Chocolate Bread Pudding and it was literally to die for if you're a fan of that kind of thing. I licked the plate clean (figuratively). All and all I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking to try something new in Howard County. While I have read some of the poorer reviews, I have to say that nothing that was said in them was my wife and I's personal experience. I will definitely be coming back in the next month.

This is exactly the place I would design for a modern day eatery. Delicious and unique food using local and organic resources. Homemade everything (condiments, sauces, in-house smoked bacon, etc). Fantastic hand craft beer and drink menu!

We eat out once a week, and I saw a review of this place in the HoCo Times some time ago, but the family did not like the idea of farm to table. My son went there with friends and his report on White Oak convinced his Dad we should try it. We all had beers and they were excellent. The selection of beer was great. We had the Cowboy Burger and Fish and Chips and both were very tasty and a good sized portion. We are putting this restaurant on our rotation of places we go, so we'll be back. There are so many other great selections of food and beer to try. Our waitress and the other staff were very friendly and helpful. The decor and ambiance were very nice.

I heard their burgers were voted "best burger in howard county." So, i tried their burger.... It was like a mini burger.....it was 4-5 bites. I really didnt see anything special about the burger and it came with a small salad mix that was extremely sour. I was still hungry when i left. Plus the burger was ~$15!!

Food was excellent. Brussels sprouts were perfect! Collin, the server, was amazingly polite.. The atmosphere had something left to be desired, but overall was a great experience for me and the boyfriend.. I highly recommend!

From the time we got there until we left, the White Oak Tavern disappointed. First, they lost our reservation as they rely on writing things down in a notebook. When they told me I would need to wait 60 minutes, I complained that I would just leave and then....suddenly a table opened up. Their cocktails tasted terrible. If you like sugar and alcohol, go for it! I would stick to beers there. As for the food itself, I found it most disappointing. For a Farm to Table concept, the food tasted as if it had been run over in traffic and then put on a plate. It was some of the blandest food I've had in years. Clearly, this is a major misfire in terms of marketing. I question the validity of their claims as the food was simply dull beyond belief. However, their service is perhaps the most disappointing. Our server used the word FANTASTIC at least 15 times to describe the food and that was a highly incorrect adjective. She also took silver ware from the appetizer course and I had to demand a fork so I could eat my steak, after I mentioned I needed a new one. We went for long periods without a check in--particularly at the end of the night. We could have left 15 minutes earlier but no one approached our table to see if we were okay. All in all, this place needs a major overhaul. New wait staff, new host staff and a new chef might salvage this place. Otherwise, eat here at your own risk.

I brought a party of six to the White Oak Tavern on a Saturday night. Despite being very busy, the service was extremely friendly and eager to answer questions about the menu. The restaurant is attractive inside. There is a nice bar with screens for watching sports, and three separate dining rooms. There was a mix of customers there, from couples eating and drinking at the bar, to large groups, to families with little kids. A slice of Ellicott City. They have a wide selection of craft brews, so you'll find something you like. Also, several at my table ordered cocktails which featured fresh fruit (blueberries) and herbs (basil) and were very tasty. The menu is a one pager-- not gigantic but a good variety. I ordered a special: blackened catfish over mushroom risotto and sauteed spinach, with a splash or lobster bisque on the side of the fish. Excellent. Burgers at the table were good, so were the Caesar salads with grilled chicken. My daughter ordered a buttermilk fried chicken (with greens) that she liked but I thought was slightly dry. The coating was crispy and delicious, though. Cheddar honey cornbread appetizer was really moist and sweet. Good with beer. Good new joint in the shadow of the old Enchanted Forest.

Went back a week after our first visit. I was disappointed that the menu had completely changed since we loved what we had the week before. My husband and I both had the smoked turkey sandwich- it was OK but needed something more; was a bit bland. We'll come back but maybe wait to see what the spring menu is.

I want to start with the positives for this restaurant. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. Also, the beer selection was great. My party tried a few and we really enjoyed them all. Now for the reason I will not be returning to white oak tavern for a meal. The food was just not very good. It was mediocre at best. Multiple dishes were too salty and just not very good. I had high hopes for this restaurant when I read over the menu. Unfortunately, it just did not live up to my expectations of a good meal.

I returned to the White Oak Tavern with my family after one positive experience and had a much more mixed dining experience. While beer selection is good at the restaurant, such diverse selections are fairly easy to find in Ellicott City and the surrounding area. Service at the Tavern was attentive but food is generally very slow to come out of the kitchen. Items like corn bread should be very quickly prepared. Food at the tavern has been of varying quality and is quite expensive. While items like brisket, the tavern burger, and the corn bread were quite good, other items such as the beet salad, ceasar salad, mushroom fritters, and pork chop were mediocre at best. Most food items were quite expensive with all but one of the entrees priced over $20 and items such as 2 slices of corn bread priced at $5. This Friday at 7:30, I saw very few diners but many drinkers at the White Oak Tavern. I would suggest that the Tavern start streamlining their kitchen and modifying their menu if they want to stand above the many taphouses in the area.

The cheddar cornbread, the chocolate bread pudding... Seriously what sicko came up with this. The food is ridiculously good, service was good, and its close to home. Ellicott City is starting to get some seriously good restaurants, and this place is one of the best of the new haunts.

On my recent visit to the The White Oak Tavern I found that they had once again updated their menu with sesonal delights. everything my party ordered was yummy and well priced. we were able to split many small plates to get a variety of flavors, all of which were so fab! additionally I couldn't decide on a beer and the bartender took my likes and turned them into libations! thanks so much, can't wait to return for more!!!!

Just got back from an early dinner and I couldn't wait to share my experience. I read the other reviews and I thought that some of the people were a bit harsh especially since the place just opened up last weekend! I went to dinner with with three other people ready to eat! We were greeted immediately by a very friendly hostess who seated us right away. The manager also came up to greet us which I thought was a nice touch. I thought the place looked amazing, especially since I had been to the previous business.I felt so comfortable and cozy in the dining area. The place looked great. Our waitress came over within minutes and took our drink orders. We were able to get several drinks on the happy hour menu, which included beers and a hour wine both of which were $4! For our food we ordered the corn bread and wings for the small plates. For our entrees, we choose the burgers (which came with fries or salad), the salmon cakes, and the beef brisket. ALL WERE DELICIOUS. I must admit that I was a bit concerned over the prices of the menu items, but the minute that each bite of food hit my mouth I understood why. I loved every item on the menu that we tried. We all forced ourselves to get dessert, but we decided on bread pudding, creme brulee, and the chess pie. Again, all delicious. In my opinion, the creme brulee was the best tasting dessert. We will definitely be coming back, especially for brunch. We can't wait to try out some of the other amazing menu items!

The food was great. Try the wings and the apple pie a la mode (with cheesy crust!!!). Amazing. Really any of the desserts are a home run. The place is comfortable, the noise level isn't too loud (so rare in a packed restaurant!), and I love all the wood finishings. I'll definitely be back!

I went there hearing that it was a little pricey, but I kind of expected that for micro brews and farm to table food. So a friend and I went there around 5pm on a Saturday and there was a small crowd. By the time we left (around 6:15), people were waiting for a seat...so get there early. I reluctantly ordered the Burger (one of the cheaper menu items $14 added garlic fries $2 more). I tell you what, it was one of the best burgers I have ever had! It came out cooked to my order of medium and my friends medium rare (house recommends M.R.). I loved the home made Ketchup it was different...of course I'm used to Heinz.... It was delicious! The burger was huge and filled me up for the whole day well into the night (and I can eat). I think it is one of the best burgers in town and worth the money. Two people can easily spend $100.00 if you like to drink. We had 2 burgers and 4 beers at around $60 not including tip. Which I will say is worth the money. I would do it again, just not every week because I could not afford it. lol For those who like good beer and good food and are willing to pay for it , I highly recommend this bar. Good for a casual upscale date, or to hang out. I think they capture what they were trying to do, with an upscale casual dining. The bartender told me everything is made from scratch, even condiments. Very nice staff, knowledgeable on the craft beers they serve and cool atmosphere. I will definitely eat there again and recommend the venue highly. Cheers and hope this review give some insight.

I had a great experience here. I will definitely return. It was my first time trying this place and it was a nice dinner and a great atmosphere. Although, I wasn't totally pleased with my meal selection "chicken papriskash" (was based in some sort of tomatoe sauce(?) that I didnt really care for); the service was great and the beer selection was wonderful. The food was very fresh and of high quality. It's a little pricey...yet, I will try a different meal on my next visit.....this place is definitely a spot I want to frequent at least monthly.

Don't let the location discourage you from trying. Energetic atmosphere and really good food. Had the chips and dip and wanted to lick the bowl; the brisket is incredible smoked to perfection and seasoned so well. I am not typically a brisket fan but guarantee I will be back for this one. Excellent beer selection and bartenders very friendly. Glad to have a new locally food sourced restaurant to frequent!

This place needs some work. I went there on a weeknight, and the bar was packed, however the dining room wasn't. This is what we ordered with impressions of each dish; you will find overall impressions at the bottom. Small plates - Cheese plate: The presentation was uninspiring. White, rectangular plate, with no color variation except for a pickled carrot, almost looked to be thrown in at the last minute. A very white, bland plate. They had two types of the same cheese and one different type. The menu quoted three types of cheese. At first I thought they were all three the same but after tasting came to the conclusion there were 2 varieties. I had to bring this up to the waitress, and a manager was sent over who said they were three different types. When I asked, "Are you sure?" she checked with the kitchen. As suspected, two different types. They did comp me this, however, which was quite nice. The chutney included with the cheese plate was unexciting and tasted like canned applesauce. The bread was limp and tasteless. - Wings: The presentation was on a white plate, with pickled radishes and carrots to the side. Boring. These were good, but they could have been cooked a bit longer to eliminate the unsightly bloodline that will run along the bone. - Oyster mushroom fritters: Again, plain white plate. Sensing a pattern here. These were good and reminded me of the oyster fritters that I've had at the farmers market in Baltimore. In fact, I think this is a direct reproduction. The only suggestion I would have is to add some sort of dressing, oil & vinegar, something to the frisee/cheese bed; it was a bit dry. - Gumbo: Came in a plain white bowl. Bacon garnish. No andouille sausage that I found in the bowl, only small shrimp and shredded meat. Gumbo was lacking in seasoning and desperately needed salt. There was no salt on the table, and I was hesitant to ask for salt b/c I had already questioned the kitchen with the cheeseboard. So, I spread the bacon as best I could and it helped, somewhat. - Side of Broccolini: Served on a small square plate. I had to ask the waitress twice to find out how it was prepared. The first time she answered, "sauteed." Yes, but sauteed in what? This was quite good. It was prepared with oil, salt, and pepper only. Delicious. Dessert - Chess pie: Served on plain white plate. Cloyingly sweet. - Cookies & cream: Served on plain white plate. The homemade gingersnap cookies were excellent, chewy with just a hint of crunch at the edges. Overall Impression: The White Oak Tavern is trying very hard to be something it is not...at least not at the moment. The menu speaks to sophisticated palates, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. A few tips...work on presentation! We eat with our eyes first. Everything was plain, white, bland looking. Some fresh herbs, sauces, etc would do wonders. Train your waitstaff to answer questions! They do get a pass on this though since I think it was the first week they were open. However, an inspired restaurant would make sure this would not be an issue. Season your food properly and you'll have repeat business. I do like what they are trying to do here, again, they need to work on their execution.

My wife and I were granted a surprise night out by my in-laws while they watched the Kids (there are 2 of them now!). We got in the car and started thinking about where to go to eat. My wife recommended the White Oak Tavern after a good experience with her baby shower. All around, we had a great experience. The wait for a table was just long enough to enjoy one of the many excellent beer selections that were on tap. I ordered the meatloaf and my wife ordered a burger which sounded like a standard burger to me when I reviewed the menu. Our meals were brought to us and once I caught eye of the burger, I was immediately jealous of her selection. However, once I had the opportunity to try the meatloaf, I was impressed and happy with my choice. My wife described her burger as "probably the best burger I have ever had!" The White Oak Tavern is now on our list of favorites!

Only open for two weeks. They claim everything is made from scratch and I'd believe it. Short, but very interesting, menu with extensive beer list. We had the BBQ brisket, cheddar cheese cornbread, and winter squash soup. Everything was great. Slight issue with the cornbread not being very warm, but the staff took care of it with no problems. Great addition to the Ellicott City dining scene and we'll definitely be back. Could use some more booth seating, but that's a quibble.

We went last night. They've done some nice refinishing inside from what I remember of Jilly's. The bar area was full so we sat in the dining room. We're average-sized people and had trouble squeezing into our seats without disturbing the tables next to us. However, that's an easy fix and I suspect they'll work it out soon. We opted to make a dinner out of small plates - the cheese platter, andouille sausage, wings, and cornbread. Service was good - everything came out the way we asked for it, and they got the timing right. The cheese had some nice flavor to it, even if I'd have liked some more variety. The jam added a nice sweetness, although the texture wasn't quite what I was expecting (almost apple-sauce-y). The bread was good, although I prefer mine toasted for a cheese plate. The unexpected star of that plate, for me, was the pickled carrots and radishes(?). Yum! I'm not big on wings but the one I had was fine with me. I loved the andouille and ate most of it myself - great sausage and the rice it was served with was just as tasty. By the time I around to the cornbread, it was cold, but that was because I had been busy stuffing my face with andouille. Still tasty though! Overall, a pretty good meal, especially considering they just opened. We'll be back, and I suspect they'll earn another star the next time around.

Stopped in here because we were in the area shopping. It was quiet and almost empty. Ordered a beer and their signature burger. Great choice. Everything tasted as though it was prepared to order ,which is uncommon at a bar type place at 3 in the after noon. I will definitely return and try out the rest of the menu. Also talked to one of the owners and he informed us that the menu rotates by season. Great concept.
(5)Clint S.
The only reason I come here is for the insanely great tap beer selection. This includes local, regional, and even some foreign beers. They've had some really select beer on tap. For example, they had Brew Dog (foreign) on tap and I've never seen it anywhere in Maryland except for the Perfect Pour in Columbia. Another great foreign beer they've had is Mikkeller which is just as hard to find in MD. I've had a bunch of different things from their menu. The food isn't bad but it isn't that great either. The Mexican place next door is one of the few good Mexican food restaurants in MD.

Very unassuming exterior in a strip plaza, but great decor once inside. My husband and I sat in the bar area. We thought the prices were a little high - Draft beers were all $7 apiece, simple burgers were $14. Food was ok, but both of our burgers were undercooked. I ordered mine medium and it came out rare to medium-rare, my husband ordered his medium well and it was maybe medium. This place seems like it has some potential, it just lacks a little on the delivery. We went on a Saturday night at 7pm, and there were lots of empty tables, so I can't be the only one who had hoped for a little more from this place - I think that's mostly because of it being overpriced.
(3)Mike A.
Great service, Great food. I really enjoyed it. I would say the best burger I have ever had (white oak burger) definitely must go here. It is well worth it. The people here care and they take care of you very well. They really walk the talk. I definitely go back and will take more people with me.

This was a tale of two menus. We first visited White Oak for lunch on New Year's eve. It was very good. I had the Cuban, my Mom had the Oyster Po Boy and my wife had the spicy Chicken sandwich. All were very flavorful, albeit a bit pricey for the portion size. We looked forward to a return visit, which occurred today. In a word, what happened? The menu was totally different, with the sandwiches we really enjoyed gone. That's OK, as seasonal menu changes are not unwelcome. The problem is the winter alternatives were not very appetizing. I settled on the Oyster small platter (which was the best part of the meal), half a Duck salad and the Turkey sandwich. My wife had the Gumbo and Turkey sandwich. As I mentioned, the Oyster small plate with Bloody Mary sauce and jalapeno was very tasty, but only contained 4 small fried oysters. The Duck salad only had 3 very small pieces of Duck prosciutto (which was tasty) and the dressing was nondescript. The Gumbo had 1 piece of sausage, maybe a spoonful of chicken, and was mostly rice. Our Turkey sandwiches were OK, but had no pop. I could not taste the bacon or onion at all. The entire meal lacked seasoning. Will we return? That remains to be seen. I can tell you that after our 1st visit, we had planned to purchase tickets to the upcoming Oysterfest, but are now seriously re-evaluating that decision.

Don't let the menu or renovations persuade you. We had just tried White Oak Tavern for the first time on a Sunday and it was lack luster. When we walked in we were greeted by an unpleasant hostess that gave an awkward (we only do brunch on weekends so look at the menu) basically are you sure you want to eat here cause you can leave. Felt a little awkward at that point. Our waiter was great which was nice he was on top of everything and had great customer service. Since they only serve brunch on the weekends we both ordered the white oak burger. The burger was decent but wasn't necessarily worth $14. The fries that came with it came out burnt and other customers who got fried items were complaining about the burnt taste to their food. They needed to change their oil. Overall this seasons menu is not that appealing and not sure if we would go back. If you are still curious maybe try something and split it so you won't be disappointed.
(2)D H.
Much more upscale than Jillys. That said, the menu is limited, overpriced and uninspiring. Paid $16 for a burger. A decent beer selection. The servers were attentive, while still learning their job.

I am giving it two stars for the layout and the waiter we had. My husband, toddler, and I came out for a weekday lunch, having high expectations for this pub. We were really excited about the menu and the quality of the foods and decided to go with some normal items, our daughter is a picky eater. We started off with fried pickles which were meh, a bit too soggy for us. My daughter picked out the corn dog, which was more of an adult version and just had to much for even me to enjoy. I had the burger and the waiter convinced me to add their bacon and my husband had the steak sandwich. Our orders kept on getting messed up with items missing or completely wrong for our orders and the poor waiter was super embarrassed but started to catch on to the error of the chef's way around the 3rd time of going back to the kitchen and finally just checked our orders before bring it back to the table. My burger lacked flavor and was greasy, thank goodness he recommended the bacon, though it did look like thick pieces of greasy fat it had the most flavor. My husbands steak sandwich was not impressive at all, should've heeded the warning of others complaining about the weird combo of kimchi and steak. Loved the environment and love the concept, food could definitely be cooked better and service could have definitely been better. To be honest its unfair to review this when all I could do is compare it to Victoria's pub.
